What's Happening December 6-10

  • We are reading Voyage of the Dawn Treader aloud in class. We should have about half of it read by Friday, the day we go see the movie! (Parents are welcome to come. You will just pay for your movie as you come in. Lunch is across the parking lot at Los Amigos.)
  • Students are starting a writing piece these last few weeks before Christmas Break. It will be a work in progress. I believe they are excited about this writing piece because they came up with the writing prompt! The topics range from Human Decency to Bullying. Types of writing to choose from are: letters, speeches, or articles.
  • We are studying about Verbs this week in Grammar. Being, Linking, Verb Tenses, and Irregular Verbs.
  • Last day to earn AR points for this nine weeks is Dec. 16. The second nine weeks party will be a movie, donut, and hot chocolate party on the morning of Dec. 17.

We watched the documentary, "Paper Clips," about a school group in Whitwell, TN who started a Holocaust Memorial at their school. Paul Schamburg will come to our class as a guest speaker to talk about tolerance and differences in people. We watched "High School Musical" at GCHS Monday. Please send your $1 for admission if you haven't paid already.

Can Drive is underway! Bring in those canned goods for families in need over the holidays. The class with the largest percentage of cans brought in will receive an ice cream party!

What's happening in class?

November 8-12
  • Monday we will take a test over last week's words/chapters from Number the Stars (1-6) and finalize our open responses from Friday.
  • Tuesday-Friday we will read chapters 7-9 in Number the Stars. (See the page with Reading Websites for a link to Number the Stars activities.)
  • We complete a "6th Grade" vocabulary activity sheet each day. These are words all 6th graders should know.
  • We are starting a new Drops in the Bucket sheet this week: Editing paragraphs.
  • To help students prepare for testing, I have taken sentences from the text we read and make it grammatically incorrect (or not). Students have multiple choice answers to choose the correctly written form of the sentence.

This week in Reading/Language Arts

This week we are focusing on an introduction to the Holocaust. We are reading the play, "The Diary of Anne Frank" in groups, then aloud in class. We will also view videos and other memorabilia about the Holocaust.

Tuesday, October 26 is our field trip to the Carson Center to watch the performance of "The Diary of Anne Frank" play.

Words for Oct. 18-22 are compound words: drawback, layaway, viewpoint, gumshoe, ripcord, showdown, sideswipe, spendthrift, trendsetter, and turncoat. We will write Cause/effect statements using these words.

Monday, September 27, 2010

This week, Sept. 27-Oct 1, in Language Arts, the students will complete a vocabulary quest with their vocabulary words. They have a choice to do a power point, flashcards, a crossword puzzle, a foldable, etc. The activity needs to help them learn their words and definitions for the week.

We will be finishing up on Hatchet Wednesday! Test Thursday, Movie Friday!
Students may complete a book project for Hatchet. Topics include divorce, loneliness, survival, ecosystems, or favorite scene from the book. These will be due Oct. 15 or 18.

AR Goals need to be met by Friday, October 1. Students who have earned their goal will play Wii games Friday afternoon!

2010-2011

Welcome 2010-2011 Central Knights! Currently, the 6th grade Knights are reading a novel entitled, Hatchet. The students have a study guide for comprehension and vocabulary activities. We will be talking about survival and ecosystems along with the book.

Additionally, some students have chosen to be in a Book Club. These are groups of students who have chosen to read the same book. In their spare time, they can read together or discuss the book. Once they are finished, they may present the book to the class to persuade other students to read the book, too.

Fall Festival is coming up! October 22. We are designing the Haunted Maze! We will need your help building and decorating the maze the week of Fall Festival.
